Celebrating 25 Years of Dance Excellence!Join us for the excitement, challenge, and fun of learning to dance. Whether you're a beginner or an aspiring performer, Backstage Dance Studio has a class to meet your needs. If you're looking for a dance studio in Howard County, you've come to the right place!Backstage offers personalized, professional instruction in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Hip Hop, Pointe, Lyrical, Cecchetti, Zumba, and Rockin' Tots for dance enthusiasts of all ages and levels of ability. Our experienced, professional dance instructors provide high-energy, goal-oriented dance instruction in a friendly, supportive environment. Backstage students receive personalized placement according to their previous experience and ability. Students advance at their own, individual paces of learning and skills development. Students demonstrate what they've learned in our annual dance revue. Students are encouraged to audition for our award-winning Show Troupe team from Pee-Wee to Elite. Backstage competes at regional competitions throughout the year and are often asked to perform and entertain at fundraisers, community events and holiday performances. Backstage Dance Studio strives to meet all your dancing needs and has been offering quality group instruction in Howard County and the surrounding communities since 1987. We have programs designed to meet the needs of both the recreational dancer and serious students looking to further their studies professionally. In classes with an average student/ teacher ratio of 8:1, Backstage students receive plenty of personal attention from our qualified instructors and assistants. Our spacious, climate controlled facilities with three dance rooms, state-of-the-art audio equipment and sprung dance floors provide an excellent dance environment for dance enthusiasts of all levels.Over the past 25 years, many of our students have gone on to receive dance scholarships from universities, such as University of Oklahoma, UMBC, Elan, and East Carolina University. Others have gone on to professional careers in and on Broadway, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Cruise Ships and Disney World. Many of our current students also perform in local theater and community productions.

Newsletter Backstage Dance StudioNovember 2011 NewsletterVISITING: Visiting days will take place December 5-17, 2011. All observations will take place during these two weeks. This is the perfect opportunity to observe your child’s class and individual progress, and to ask any questions you may have. Due to limited seating available in the classrooms, only two (2) visitors are allowed per student. Please follow the attached visiting schedule to ensure that you attend the correct observation day(s) for your child. Please make every effort to attend - this is a very important day for your child (children)! If you cannot be present for visiting, please make arrangements for another family member to attend so that no child feels left out.TUITION REMINDER:Tuition for the months of December and January are due on December 1st, 2011. Tuition payments received after 12/07/2011 are considered late, and a $10.00 late fee will be assessed.COSTUMES: A picture of each costume to be ordered will be shown in class on visiting day. All balances on costumes must be PAID IN FULL no later than December 17, 2011. Costumes will not be ordered unless payment in full is received by this date.SNOW CLOSINGS: In case of bad weather, please call the studio for cancellation information. We do not follow Howard County school closings! Studio closure due to weather will be on our recorded message no later than 1:00PM weekdays and 8:15AM on weekends. If you call after this time and there is not a weather message, classes will be held as scheduled. In any case, please do not feel obligated to travel to class if you are uncomfortable with the weather conditions. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather will not be made up. Students may take a make-up in another regularly scheduled class if they wish.LOST AND FOUND: All articles of clothing remaining in the dressing room or lost and found on the last day of class in December will be removed and donated to a local charity over the winter break. Please check the cubbies for any missing shoes or clothing. BACKSTAGE DANCE STUDIO POLICIES 2011-20121. TUITION PAYMENTS. Your 1st tuition payment along with a registration fee is due at time of registration. Tuition payments #2, #3, #4, and #5 are due on the first of October, December, February, and April. Backstage does not mail out invoices and a $10.00 late fee will be charged after the 7th of each month. Once a class is taken in any given tuition period, tuition paid is completely non-refundable and non-transferable to another student or class. Any student who has an outstanding balance will not be permitted to take class until the account is brought back current. For all returned checks, there will be a $30.00 fee. If a check is returned, the payment must be made by credit card, money order, or cash to bring the account current. Auto payments are also available (see front desk for form).2. CLASS WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY. Requests for withdrawal for one or more classes must be made by the dancer or parent/guardian on a Withdrawal Form, which can be obtained from the front desk. Upon such withdrawal within the time frame permitted, tuition shall be adjusted accordingly. No refunds shall be made for withdrawals not timely made, and the undersigned parent/guardian shall remain responsible for payment.3. RECITAL COSTUMES. Costumes cost approximately $60-$75 each. A minimum deposit of $30 per costume should be paid by October 31, 2011. The balance of the costume amount is due no later than December 15, 2011. Costumes are ordered over the Winter Break. COSTUMES WILL NOT BE ORDERED UNLESS THEY ARE PAID IN FULL BY THE DEADLINE.4. RECITAL FEE. A recital fee of $35.00 per student or $40.00 per family will include two recital tickets and must be paid with your April tuition payment. Recital fees are non-refundable. No tickets may be picked up if there is a balance on your studio account, which includes tuition, store items, or any other miscellaneous charges. Additional tickets may be purchased in May on a first come, first served basis.5. MINIMUM ENROLLEMENT. Minimum enrollment is six students per class. If the minimum enrollment is not met, the class may be canceled or combined with a similar class.6. CLASS ETIQUETTE. All students are expected to be on time and properly attired for class. Students who do not adhere to the dress code will not be permitted to participate in class. ALL students must be in proper shoes and attire by the second week of class. Please visit the studio website for shoe and dress codes for each class (posted August 1, 2011) and plan to shop early! Students are expected to behave properly at all times. Gross misconduct will not be tolerated.7. VISITING DAYS. Visiting Days will be held twice yearly so that parents may observe their child's progress. Notices will be sent home specifying these dates and times. Please make every effort to attend these two days at the studio. No visitors are permitted in classrooms at any other time unless the instructor gives special permission.8. COMMUNICATIONS. Important studio updates and announcements will be made monthly by email. It is imperative that all families have a current email on file to receive these updates as this will be our main source of communication with parents. 9. ABSENCES. Always call the studio before class starts whenever any absence is necessary. Absences must be made up within one month, as there are REFUNDS ARE NOT GIVEN FOR MISSED CLASSES.10. INCLEMENT WEATHER. In case of bad weather conditions, please call the studio for cancellation information. We do not follow Howard County school closings. In any case, please do not feel obligated to travel to class if you are uncomfortable with the weather conditions.11. EARLY DROP-OFF & LATE PICK-UP. Students are not to be dropped off at the studio any earlier than 15 minutes prior to their first class of the day, and must be picked up no later than 15 minutes following the conclusion of their final class of the day. A fee of $10.00 will be assessed for every 15 minutes, or portion thereof for drop-offs earlier than 15 minutes before the start of the student's first class of the day, and for any pick-ups later than 15 minutes following the end of the student's last class of the day. This does not apply to students waiting for their student siblings to finish their last class of the day.12. SIBLINGS. For liability reasons, persons under the age of 18 who are not attending class at Backstage on a given day are not permitted to be left in the studio without a parent or guardian while a sibling is in class.13. PERMISSION TO USE PHOTOGRAPHS. I give Backstage Dance Studio permission to use my child's photograph for purposes of promoting the dance studio and its camps.14. WAIVER & RELEASE OF CLAIMS. Parent/Guardian and dancer recognize the risk of injury inherent in any dance program. Parent/Guardian acknowledges that the dancer is participating upon his/her express agreement that injury may occur and agrees to release Backstage Dance Studio, its employees, directors, and volunteers from any and all liability relating to such an incident.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS At Backstage Dance Studio, it is our mission and commitment to provide quality dance instruction and artistic training of the highest possible caliber. In developing and maintaining a successful dance program, we offer all students a positive learning experience while promoting an atmosphere of excitement and fun. We instill and nurture the self-discipline, self-confidence and creativity required to become proficient in the art of dance. Backstage embraces the opportunities for students and teachers to take master classes and attend conventions and conferences to enhance an increased level of learning and skills. We also provide performance opportunities so that students may participate in the world of dance through community projects, competitions, and annual recitals to showcase their talents. Backstage establishes effective communication channels while exhibiting fairness, understanding, and generosity between management, teachers, students, and their families.

PRE-BALLETAges 3-6A ballet class designed specifically for pre-school children, including basic floor stretches, the eight basic movements of dance, and positions of the feet and arms.

Pre-Tap

PRE-TAPAges 3-6An introduction to tap for pre-school children. Classes are created to increase fine motor skills, musical awareness and basic tap sounds to later build upon.

Pre-Jazz

PRE-JAZZAges 5-6Designed for those dancers who enjoy be-bopping to upbeat music. This class increases flexibility and introduces movement with body awareness.

Ballet Basics
No Frame

BALLET BASICSAges 7 & upA class incorporating basic ballet fundamentals, terminology and use of space.

Tap Basics
No Frame

TAP BASICSAges 7 & upThis class emphasizes rhythm and timing along with combining basic tap steps. Movement and song make this a fun learning experience for young dancers.

Tap TAPA lively form of dance using basic to intricate rhythms. Students learn a variety of tap styles and techniques along with proper body alignment.

Jazz

JAZZA high-energy class combining various jazz styles including classical, Broadway theatre, contemporary and funk.

Lyrical

LYRICALAn expressive, yet technically challenging, form of dance that combines ballet, jazz and modern dance styles. All lyrical students must be enrolled in at least one ballet class per week.

Hip Hop

HIP HOPMove and groove to your favorite music while learning the newest video dance steps.

Pointe

POINTEA class with the basic ballet fundamentals, dancing in pointe shoes on the tips of the toes.

CECCHETTI BALLETThe Cecchetti Method of classical ballet (based on the teaching method of Italian Ballet Master Enrico Cecchetti) is offered for students who want an extra challenge.Students participating are able to concentrate more on technique and artistry through their studies in the method, and are able to be presented for exams in front of accredited examiners.

ROCKIN-TOTSAges 2-3A program designed to experience the dance studio atmosphere while having the freedom to express creativity through songs, rhythm, props and movement.Young dancers are surrounded by music, mirrors and barres - the same setting that will one day become a familiar place should they choose to continue their dance education.40 minute classes are set in a relaxed atmosphere where FUN is the #1 priority!

Summer Programs

summer wouldn't be summer without Backstage !

Backstage offers outstanding SUMMER CAMPS for children (ages 3-12), as well as challenging workshops (ages 9-16) and SUMMER CLASSES for children to adults of all ages and levels.Our Summer programs have ended for 2011, and we're already planning for next year!Check back for our full program schedule... Dance Camps

For girls 6-12, this is our most popular camp! Enroll in one or all four! A full schedule of Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and Choreography classes, along with arts & crafts makes this camp a well-rounded experience for all dancers. End of camp performance and FREE camp T-shirt! No dance experience required.

Little Dancers Camp

This half-day camp for girls ages 3-6 allows the young dancer to experience Tap, Jazz and Ballet in a safe and fun environment. Your child will partake in dancing, singing, tumbling, costume dress-up, arts & crafts and games, while surrounded by the studio atmosphere. End of camp performance and FREE camp T-shirt! This is guaranteed to be a great experience for

every little dancer!

Strictly Technique Workshop

For the intermediate and advanced dancer ages 9-16 who want to strengthen their skills in all forms of dance -

Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, and Hip Hop. This is a concentrated workshop taught by our Show Troupe faculty and guest teachers.
